Is Working Remotely Best for your Career?

According to an American Staffing Association and Harris Poll Survey, nearly six in 10 U.S. adults (56%) believe employees who work exclusively in-office have a competitive advantage over their fully remote counterparts when it comes to getting raises, bonuses, and promotions. However, despite this sentiment, less than half (48%) of workers report they are working completely in-person, 28% are working on a hybrid schedule, and 24% are fully remote.

Although the idea of working from home seemed attractive to most employees whenever the necessity began to arise in 2020, a majority of people were glad to be back in their usual work environment once they were allowed to do so.  A significant number of positions whose duties can be carried out remotely may remain so, but the advantages of having a dedicated workplace (away from home) with structured time and environment dedicated to your career is also now much more appreciated by employees as well as the companies they work for.

New Year of Fresh Challenges

Happy New Year from Tiger Labor & Staffing!

Although overall it still remains drastically more difficult to recruit than it was several years ago, small-business owners say it is getting easier to hire people and retain them, according to a survey of more than 650 entrepreneurs by the Wall Street Journal. Nearly 25% of respondents say it was easier to fill job openings in December than it was at the beginning of the year—an increase from 18% in November. Twenty percent said it was more difficult to fill open jobs, down from 25% in November. The shift is modest and comes as unfilled job openings continue to pressure many small companies. Of those surveyed, 56% said hiring challenges made it difficult to operate at full capacity. Eighty-four percent reported boosting wages in response to labor-market challenges, and more than two-thirds reported offering flexible hours and schedules.

5 Tips to Help Cope with Staffing Shortages

At Tiger Labor & Staffing, we have continued to successfully support our clients throughout the national staffing shortage. Below are a few tips to increase productivity during this unique time.

1. Prioritize your assignments
Examine your assignments and categorize activities as high, medium, or low priority. Start with the high-priority activities. Next, tackle medium-priority duties. Many low-priority activities can be delegated to new or non-skilled personnel.
2. Be a team player
Make a rule that no one can sit until everyone can sit. If you finish your work before others, pitch in. Teamwork creates bonds between co-workers, makes difficult situations tolerable, and enhances productivity.
3. Communicate effectively—and nicely
Communicate clearly so that everyone knows the plan for surviving the staff shortage. Safeguard the feelings and dignity of all team members. Assess your own communication style: Do you ever speak in a demeaning or condescending way when you’re stressed?
4. Ensure everyone is okay
During each shift, try to make sure everyone is taking their breaks, even if only briefly. If they can’t leave the office, they can at least take a moment for themselves in the break room. To stave off burnout, eat a balanced diet and get enough rest and exercise. “Working through lunch” may seem heroic, but without a good break, your employees won’t be worth much.

Creating a Staffing Plan

What is a Staffing Plan?

Staffing plans are often confused with recruitment plans, but they aren’t the same. Recruiting is a single step in the employment process, seeking and onboarding a candidate for a particular role. Staffing is an ongoing process that encompasses the behind the scenes motivations as well.

Here are 5 tips to help you build an effective Staffing Plan

  1. Determine your business goals

The best starting point for a staffing plan is your organization’s business strategy, which should contain both short term and long-term goals for the company.

  1. Identify staffing and people needs

For a successful staffing and people strategy, you first need to understand the skills, experience and resources required to achieve your business goals. Consider the timeline of activities required to fulfil each role, and plan accordingly. For example, what roles do you need? How long does it typically take to recruit them?

  1. Review employee patterns

There’s always a pattern of ebb and flow of employee levels throughout any organization; staying ahead of potential movements can ensure there are no surprises. After looking over your data: How many people quit and/or get fired in an average year? Is there a person that misses work regularly to the extent they should be replaced? Is there a time of year when people are out most due to vacations/personal plans and you could utilize extra help?

  1. Identify staffing and people needs

For a successful staffing and people strategy, you first need to understand the skills, experience and resources required to achieve your business goals. To maximize the efficiency of the recruitment process, you also need to consider the timeline of activities required to fulfil each role, and plan accordingly. For example, what roles do you need? How long does it typically take to recruit them?

  1. Review the strategy regularly

Regularly review your plan to ensure you are adapting the people needs of your business as conditions change. The termination or signing of your single biggest client could have a drastic impact on your staffing requirements and operating margins.

5 Tips to Help Boost Interview Success

Crafting a good job posting, sorting through the sheer volume of applications, hiring the best fit, completing their onboarding and training; these steps should produce results, but how much effort are we putting into the actual interview process? Properly preparing and conducting (or improperly) can have a drastic effect on your hiring outcomes.

  1. Preparation

Just like a candidate preparing for an interview, the company needs to prepare just as much. This includes knowing what you are evaluating each candidate on. Review their application and highlight parts that you want to zero in on or delve into.

  1. Have some pre-written questions

Recruiters report often facing the dilemma of not getting the candidate to tell enough about themselves and/or their skills. If so, it wasn’t the applicant’s fault, but the lack of good probing questions that failed to garner the necessary information.

  1. Don’t watch the clock

What would you think if applicant sped through the interview because they had another job interview to be at or another appointment to attend to? The same etiquette applies to the interviewer, make sure you’ve allotted enough time to properly screen them for the aptitude and skills you require.

  1. Two heads are better than one

Having at least one other person in on the interview can be invaluable. Have another person you’re your office and/or an HR professional to sit in on the interview. You will benefit from the different perceptions and interpretations each person has of the same candidate.

  1. Listen up

The most successful way to assess a candidate for a job is to allow them to do the talking.  Be ok with silence, let them fill the gaps. That’s often when they will volunteer information that is gold.

An interview can only be as successful as the ability of the hiring manager conducting the interview to glean the information necessary to make an informed decision. Hopefully these tips will help keep on the right track to bringing on next successful team member!
